REGINALD WILLIAMS SENTENCED IN BEAUMARIS FOR VIOLATING SEX OFFENDER RESTRICTIONS
In a recent development at Caernarfon Crown Court, Reginald Peter Williams, a known sex offender from Beaumaris, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for attempting to deceive law enforcement officers regarding his use of electronic devices. Williams, who previously served a nine-year prison term in 2006 for serious sexual offenses, has been under a 15-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) since then, which restricts his access to internet-enabled devices. The court heard that Williams, now 63 years old and residing at Maes Gwyn in Beaumaris, was initially prohibited from using any device capable of connecting to the internet. However, this restriction was later eased, allowing him to possess such devices only if he made them available to police upon request.
Prosecutor Elen Owen detailed the incident that led to Williams’s recent conviction. In February, police officers visited his residence following credible information suggesting he possessed a laptop. During the visit, officers were shown a mobile phone and a personal computer. Owen explained, “The officers were acting on information received that Williams had a laptop and asked him again if there were any further devices in the property.”
Initially, Williams denied having any additional devices, stating there were none. However, when the officers informed him of the information they had received, his account changed. Subsequently, he produced a laptop, which was seized by the officers. During subsequent interviews, Williams fully admitted to owning and using the device, despite earlier denials.
Further back in his criminal history, Williams had received a caution in 2011 for using a computer to access the internet at a public library. The following year, he was sentenced to 12 months in jail after admitting to setting up a Facebook account, which was a breach of his court orders.
Judge Huw Rees emphasized the seriousness of Williams’s actions, stating, “This was a flagrant and deliberate breach of a court order, and not for the first time.” The judge underscored that such violations could not be treated lightly and sentenced Williams accordingly. An application to extend the existing SHPO will be considered at a later date to ensure continued oversight of his activities.
