OXFORD PENSIONER WHO MOLESTED GIRL IS JAILED
An elderly man facing the end of his life has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of grooming and sexually abusing a young girl.Reginald Warry, aged 86, received a 12-year sentence at Oxford Crown Court following his conviction on eight counts of sexual assault, which was determined late last year.
The victim, whose identity cannot be disclosed for legal reasons, was assaulted over several years beginning when she was only eight years old.
During the court hearing, prosecutor Abigail Husbands presented a victim personal statement in which the girl expressed her ongoing suffering, revealing nightmares and difficulty sleeping due to her trauma.
She also shared that she struggles to trust people anymore.
The girl’s mother submitted a statement indicating she will carry feelings of blame and self-hatred forever.
The prosecutor noted that the girl has difficulty looking at old photographs from her childhood, questioning if she was being abused even then.
Judge Nigel Daly, who sentenced Warry, emphasized that the defendant showed no remorse.
The judge highlighted that Warry’s offending was a series of progressively more serious sexual assaults over many years, targeting a particularly vulnerable and trusting victim.
He remarked that the impact on her will likely last a lifetime.
Warry, who was employed previously in engineering management and retired ten years ago, had no prior convictions.
The court found him guilty of six counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual assault involving penetration of a child under 13.
The sentencing included a 12-year prison term plus an extra year on licence due to concerns about his risk as a sexual offender, and he will be on the sex offender register for life.
