RAYMOND MONKS AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ABUSE IN LANCASHIRE AND CUMBRIA

A 78-year-old man from Lancashire, Raymond Monks, has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing a schoolboy during a weekend trip to West Cumbria.

The disturbing incident took place more than ten years ago near Frizington, during a go-karting excursion at the Rowrah race track.

The court heard that Monks had initially denied the allegations, which included showing the young boy a pornographic film before subjecting him to sexual acts inside his motorhome.

Despite his denial, the evidence presented during the trial at Carlisle Crown Court was deemed strong enough by the judge to secure a conviction.

The judge described the evidence as 'compelling,' highlighting the seriousness of the offences.

The victim, who was under 13 years old at the time, testified that he was part of a group of boys who had been taken to see Monks at his motorhome.

During the visit, Monks played a pornographic video for the boys before sending the other boys away, then closing the curtains and locking the door.

It was at this point that the abuse occurred.

The young man, now an adult, recounted how Monks took advantage of him in this private setting.

In court, Monks acknowledged being watching pornography when the boy and two other children were in his motorhome.

When questioned about whether it was appropriate to watch such material with school-aged children, Monks dismissed concerns, suggesting, "Lads are lads," and claiming that boys of that age had likely seen such content before.

Prosecutor Rob Wyn Jones emphasized that Monks, who was married and a father, exploited the situation partly because he was aware that the boy had already been groomed by Andrew Fairley, a 58-year-old man recently imprisoned for systematically grooming and abusing the same boy.

The court also learned that Monks had a reputation among boys at the racetrack for showing them pornographic videos, although Monks denied that he was sexually aroused by the films or that he used them as a means to facilitate abuse.

During defense arguments, Keith Harrison contended that Monks’s actions were isolated and less severe than the prolonged and systematic abuse carried out by Fairley.

The impact on the victim was profound.

In a heartfelt impact statement, the young man described suffering panic attacks, depression, and paranoia, all directly linked to the abuse he endured.

He expressed that he found it difficult to work with older men and revealed that while Monks didn't groom him in the same manner as Fairley, he still took advantage of his young age for sexual gratification, leaving lasting emotional scars.

Judge Richard Archer addressed Monks directly, stating, "You have been convicted by a jury on compelling evidence of the sexual abuse of [the boy]." He noted that showing the boy a pornographic film was a deliberate step meant to help Monks achieve his unlawful purpose.

The judge emphasized that Monks had used the boy for his sexual gain and then discarded him without concern for the harm caused.

Displaying no remorse, Monks, whose address was listed as Greens Lane, Rossendale, Lancashire, received a six-year prison sentence.

Additionally, he was placed on the Sex Offender Register indefinitely, meaning he must register with authorities and comply with monitoring requirements for the rest of his life.

A Sexual Harm Prevention Order was also imposed, which prohibits Monks from residing in a property where children are present unless he has written permission from Social Services.

His internet use will be strictly monitored by police as part of the conditions associated with his sentence.

As the sentences were handed down, Monks showed no visible emotion, and the court proceedings underscored the grave nature of these crimes against a vulnerable young victim.
