2001 - A man accused of indecently assaulting a young girl was released without imprisonment yesterday.
Raymond Mickle, aged 23, initially denied the allegations but admitted to the offence during his trial at Newcastle Crown Court in December.
After the hearing, he was permitted to leave court as defence counsel Michael Graham described the incident as an isolated occurrence.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Esmond Faulks stated: "Typically, cases of this nature result in immediate custodial sentences.
The public rightly feels horror when an older individual indecently touches a minor." He continued, "However, I am basing my sentence on the account presented by the defendant; this was an isolated event." Mickle, residing on Great North Road in Chester-le-Street, will be listed on the Sex Offenders' Register for five years.
