Deptford Rapist
In a case that has shocked the local community, Raymond Genas, a 36-year-old man from Deptford High Street, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for a series of heinous crimes involving sexual violence and exploitation. The lengthy and disturbing criminal history of Genas spans over a decade, with offenses committed across various locations including Blackheath Common and Blackfriars.

Genas's most notorious crime occurred 15 years ago when he forcibly raped a woman at knifepoint on Blackheath Common. The assault was particularly brutal, and Genas's violent tendencies did not stop there. He later attacked a 21-year-old woman he referred to as 'Energy Lady' in his bathroom, where he not only raped her but also assaulted her with a baseball bat, inflicting serious injuries.

Further compounding his criminal record, Genas was involved in the indecent assault of two teenage babysitters whom he employed to care for his young son. These assaults took place weeks apart, with the 14-year-old victim calling the police after Genas attempted to attack her once more. His pattern of predatory behavior was evident and deeply troubling.

Genas's past convictions include a 1993 prison sentence of three years for engaging in sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16 and for assaulting her. During that attack, he left a boot print on the victim’s face, demonstrating a level of violence and brutality. Additionally, he was convicted of perverting the course of justice in connection with witness intimidation a year prior to that.

His criminal history also features a six-year sentence handed down at the Old Bailey in December 1986 for raping a stranger at knifepoint on Blackheath Common. The court acquitted him of raping a woman in a separate incident involving allegations that she was forced to have sex after leaving the fridge door open and not doing the washing up, which was documented in court files.

Most recently, at Blackfriars Crown Court, Genas was found guilty by a jury of multiple charges, including rape, indecent assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, living off the earnings of prostitutes, and indecent assaults on the teenage babysitters. He was acquitted of two additional counts of rape, one count of ABH, and false imprisonment. However, two counts of rape and two threats to kill remained unresolved, with further charges of false imprisonment and kidnapping left on file for future proceedings.

Judge Alan Hitching, presiding over the case, indicated that he would have sentenced Genas to approximately 12 years solely for the rape conviction. During the sentencing hearing, Genas was observed taking notes in an exercise book as he listened to the court proceedings. The court was informed that his most recent rape victim had endured a turbulent life, having lived in 17 different children’s homes before meeting Genas in 1999. After their meeting, she moved in with an amateur heavyweight boxer, and shortly thereafter, Genas ordered her to work as a call girl from his flat, further illustrating his pattern of exploitation and control.

This case underscores the severity of Genas’s criminal conduct and the ongoing threat he posed to the community in Deptford and beyond. His lengthy and disturbing criminal record reflects a pattern of violence and predatory behavior that has spanned many years, culminating in the life sentence he now faces.
