Alvaston Child Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Derby, Raymond Attenborough, a 38-year-old man residing in Alvaston, was convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a teenage girl and the possession of a large collection of indecent images of children. The incident came to light after Attenborough attempted to manipulate evidence from prison, and the court proceedings revealed the extent of his criminal behavior.

According to court records, Attenborough had sexually assaulted a teenage girl, attempting to kiss her and touching her beneath her clothing. The court was informed that he had plied her with alcohol in an effort to lower her resistance. The girl, who was under 18, pushed him away during the assault, but Attenborough persisted and forcibly touched her underneath her clothes. During the incident, he also asked her to remove her top, and when she refused, a struggle ensued, resulting in him tearing her T-shirt.

Judge Ebraham Mooncey, presiding over the case at Derby Crown Court, described the impact of Attenborough’s actions on the victim. He stated, “No doubt you have been told of your impact on her. She has reoccurring nightmares, her schooling has been affected, and every time she thinks of you, she is sickened by what you did to her – that is the scar she will carry for the rest of her life.”

The court also heard that Attenborough had a significant collection of indecent images of children. At the time of his arrest in April, he was remanded in custody. Subsequently, in May, he wrote a letter to his mother from prison, requesting her to delete the images from his computer. His mother did not comply, prompting police to visit his residence on Booth Street, Alvaston, where they seized his computer. An examination of the device revealed a staggering total of 1,700 indecent images, categorized from the lowest to the most explicit levels. Specifically, there were 1,586 images classified as category one, 40 in category two, 38 in category three, 65 in category four, and one at the most severe level, category five.

During the court proceedings, Steven Coupland, representing the defense, highlighted that Attenborough had shown genuine remorse for his actions and expressed willingness to attend a sexual offenders’ treatment program to address his issues. Attenborough pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including sexually assaulting a girl under 18, making eight counts of indecent images of children, and causing actual bodily harm.

Additional details revealed that on March 13 of the previous year, Attenborough was involved in a violent revenge attack on a man in Booth Street, Alvaston. During this assault, he punched the victim, displacing his nose, which required medical treatment at the Royal Derby Hospital to reset.

As part of his sentence, Attenborough is required to sign the sex offenders register for a period of ten years and must adhere to a sexual offences prevention order upon his release. This order prohibits him from being alone with anyone under 18 and restricts his employment options involving children for life. The court’s ruling underscores the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
