THUG STRANGLED FORMER PARTNER AND ABUSED HER
An Oxford man was sentenced to avoid jail time despite being convicted of strangling his former partner.Ravzan Marin, who lives on Cowley Road, appeared at Oxford Crown Court on October 17 and was sentenced after admitting to sending a threatening message to his ex-partner on November 18, 2023.
He was also found guilty of intentionally strangling her in a trial that concluded on March 13, 2023.
A victim impact statement, read aloud by prosecutor Keith Hadrill, detailed how Marin controlled many aspects of her life ranging from her eating habits to her clothing choices.
The statement highlighted that the victim endured violence, aggression, and manipulation, and felt as if she was being used as a puppet, with Marin controlling when she ate, whom she saw, and what she wore.
She described having to pretend she was allergic to certain foods, which led to an eating disorder.
Marin insisted they eat together each night and criticized her clothes for showing too much skin, making her feel worthless and unwanted.
She recounted feeling depressed, crying often, and being threatened with breakup if she wore certain clothing.
She also revealed that Marin spat in her face and claimed to be 'the leader' during their relationship.
The woman said her experience was deeply damaging and abusive, with daily violations of her autonomy.
Defence lawyer Bethan Chichester stated that Marin denies the allegations and finds it difficult to accept them.
She added that his problematic behaviours were short-term and that he had turned to alcohol after their breakup.
Marin is described as someone with a troubled upbringing but of good character now, currently seeking voluntary therapy to improve his conduct.
Since the incident, there have been no further interactions.
Judge Ann Mulligan emphasised the severity of the crime, particularly for domestic abuse, but acknowledged mitigating circumstances such as Marin's age and inexperience in his first relationship.
She initially contemplated immediate imprisonment but was convinced to impose a suspended sentence.
Marin received a 10-month sentence, suspended for two years, and was ordered to undertake 26 days of accredited programs and complete 150 hours of community service within the next year.
Further, he must pay £250 in compensation, a surcharge of £187, and is subject to a five-year restraining order.
