In November 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving Piotr Smuga, a takeaway driver from Swansea, whose lost phone became the focal point of a serious child exploitation investigation.The phone was found near the restaurant where Smuga was employed, and it was handed in by a Good Samaritan who discovered its contents.
When police examined the device, they uncovered a horrifying collection of indecent images involving children, sparking a criminal inquiry that would reveal far more disturbing details.
Piotr Smuga, aged 47, initially came to the attention of authorities in April after he visited Swansea police station to recover his misplaced phone.
The device had been located close to his workplace, a Chinese takeaway.
Smuga had left a message on the phone offering a reward of £100 to anyone who returned it, indicating his concern over its loss.
However, during the police investigation, officers accessed the phone to identify its owner and, in doing so, discovered a cache of child abuse images that would lead to his arrest.
During an interview, Smuga admitted to owning the phone and acknowledged responsibility for downloading the illicit images.
He claimed, however, that he did not know any of the children depicted and insisted he was not attracted to minors.
Prosecutor Dean Pulling told Swansea Crown Court that Smuga had sought medical help for his collection of images, asserting that he collected them but was not aroused by them.
Despite this, the police found a staggering 3,370 indecent images of children on the device, ranging in age from just one year old to sixteen.
Among these, 318 images were classified as Category A, representing the most severe level of abuse.
Further analysis revealed that 75 of these images were videos, with 47 of them falling into Category A.
The investigation also uncovered 219 prohibited images, including sexual cartoons of children with adults and extreme pornography, such as bestiality.
The severity of the material was undeniable, and the evidence painted a clear picture of a man involved in the possession and distribution of highly illegal content.
Following his initial court appearance at Swansea Magistrates’ Court, Smuga was granted bail after admitting to the charges and was ordered to comply with sexual offender requirements.
However, just three days later, police conducted an unannounced visit to his residence.
During this visit, officers discovered additional images on another phone, including disturbing footage involving children aged between three and nine months, as well as other minors aged between two and three years.
Smuga told officers that these images had been accessed from a Russian portal and expressed remorse, saying, “I do not want to look at those photos but I can’t help myself.
I am sorry, I need to get help for this.” He faced multiple charges, including possession of indecent images of children, making such images, and possessing extreme pornography.
The case proceeded to sentencing, where Judge Geraint Walters highlighted the gravity of Smuga’s actions.
The judge noted that Smuga had appeared before the court on September 11, and despite being granted bail, he continued to download more illicit images within days.
The latest evidence showed 203 images in Category A, 116 in Category B, and 1,244 in Category C, illustrating a pattern of ongoing offending.
Judge Walters condemned Smuga’s conduct, emphasizing the harm inflicted on the children depicted in the images.
He stated, “Many of these images depicted very young children being abused.
These are real children suffering in the gravest way, and many will carry the scars for life.” Recognizing the seriousness of the case, the judge sentenced Smuga to 18 months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to sign a sexual harm prevention order for ten years, which included restrictions on internet access, and to register as a sex offender for the same period, underscoring the ongoing risk he poses to society.
