PHILIP SMITH FROM MARGATE CAUGHT WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES AND RAPE PICTURE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Margate, a local music teacher named Philip Smith, aged 50, was found to be in possession of a significant collection of indecent images depicting children, including one particularly heinous photograph that appeared to show a young girl being raped. The incident came to light during a police investigation that uncovered Smith’s disturbing online activity, leading to his arrest at his residence on Hartsdown Road early in the morning of August 8.
At Canterbury Crown Court, prosecutors revealed that Smith was found with a total of 356 indecent images of children stored on his two iPhones.
Among these, two were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of illegal content, one as Category B, and a video classified as Category C.
The severity of these images underscored the gravity of the charges against him.
Judge James O’Mahony did not hold back in condemning Smith’s actions, describing the material as “awful filth” that had “besotted his mind.” The judge’s words reflected the serious concern surrounding the case and the impact such material has on victims and society at large.
During police questioning, Smith claimed that he was unaware of the nature of the files he had accessed, asserting that he “didn’t know what (internet files) he was opening up.” He told officers that he discovered the images accidentally on his two iPhones and expressed remorse, stating he “wished he had never found them.” However, further investigation into Smith’s internet activity painted a different picture.
Authorities uncovered that he had actively searched for illegal images online, indicating a deliberate pursuit rather than accidental discovery.
This evidence was crucial in establishing the seriousness of his offending behavior.
In a candid admission, Smith acknowledged that he found children attractive, a revelation that led him to seek counseling to address what the judge described as “a serious problem.” Despite his previous good character, the court found the evidence sufficient to convict him of five charges, including possession and making indecent images of children, all committed between February and August of the previous year.
Smith pleaded guilty to all charges at magistrates’ court, and last week, he was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, a measure that will prevent him from working in any educational setting.
The court also mandated that he complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities aimed at addressing his offending behavior.
Judge O’Mahony acknowledged Smith’s apparent remorse and his efforts to seek counseling, which served as mitigating factors in the sentencing.
Nonetheless, he issued a stern warning: “If you commit any offence at all, you will serve that six months as a starting point.” The judge emphasized the importance of accountability and the potential consequences of further offending, underscoring the seriousness with which the court viewed the case.
