Despite his conviction, McAndrew has been employed under a set of eight conditions mandated by the General Medical Council, which include supervision but do not specify restrictions related to contact with minors.
Sources close to the situation have expressed outrage over the decision to retain McAndrew in his role, describing the situation as a "disgrace." They emphasized that many staff members remain unaware of his past and believe they should be informed to ensure transparency and safety.
The source further noted that some employees are deeply unhappy with the arrangement, raising concerns about patient and staff safety.
McAndrew, aged 56, is a radiologist who previously worked at the Victoria Hospital in Fife.
His criminal record dates back to 1998 when police raided his residence, leading to his admission in court of possessing disturbing images.
His own legal representative described the images as “revolting,” and McAndrew changed his plea during a legal dispute involving the computer images, ultimately resulting in a conviction.
He was fined £1,500 but did not face imprisonment.
The conviction forced him to resign from a previous position at an Irish hospital after the details of his criminal past became public.
Despite these serious allegations and convictions, McAndrew has been allowed to continue working in the medical field, raising questions about the vetting process and the safeguards in place to protect vulnerable individuals from potential harm.
