WAKEFIELD MAN PHILIP GREENHALGH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST TEENAGE GIRL

In a disturbing case that has shocked the Wakefield community, Philip Greenhalgh, aged 61, was sentenced this week at Leeds Crown Court after admitting to a series of serious sexual offences committed against a teenage girl over a period of several years.

The court heard harrowing details of how Greenhalgh exploited the girl, who was only 15 at the time, coercing her into performing degrading sexual acts in exchange for money and cigarettes.

According to court records, Greenhalgh, who was residing in Leeds but has since moved to Ingram Crescent in Knottingley near Wakefield, took advantage of the girl’s desire to earn money for a Mother’s Day gift.

The girl approached him seeking assistance, and Greenhalgh responded by offering her money, which he used as leverage to manipulate her further.

The judge, Recorder David Kelly, emphasized the manipulative nature of Greenhalgh’s actions, stating, “She wanted pocket money for a Mother’s Day present, together with the fact she had a smoking habit you encouraged by giving her cigarettes and asking for sexual favour in return.

She was unable to tell her mother at the time because she would have had to admit she was smoking cigarettes.” Prosecutor Eleanor Fry detailed how Greenhalgh initially offered to buy cigarettes for the girl, then pressed her on how she would repay him.

The situation escalated when Greenhalgh suggested she show him her breasts, which she reluctantly did, and he then touched her.

The girl, overwhelmed and distressed, went home crying.

The abuse continued as Greenhalgh persisted in touching her and even asked her to masturbate him.

He also coerced her into removing her clothes and posed her in various positions, taking explicit photographs and videos on his phone, sometimes instructing her to smile while doing so.

The court was told that Greenhalgh’s misconduct extended to attempting to persuade her to have sex with him.

He claimed to be saving a condom for that purpose, but the girl refused.

She confided in a friend, who encouraged her to report the matter to the police.

During police interviews, Greenhalgh claimed he believed the girl was 14 at the time of the offences.

His phone was examined, revealing that he had performed a factory reset to erase evidence, but investigators recovered videos and photographs, including one where he instructs her on how to pose.

Greenhalgh’s trial was scheduled to begin when he unexpectedly admitted to 16 charges, including five counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, four counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, two counts of taking indecent photographs, and three counts of making indecent photographs.

The court also learned that Greenhalgh had a criminal history, including five previous convictions, notably a rape conviction from 1992 for which he served a two-year sentence.

During mitigation, lawyer Richard Canning acknowledged that Greenhalgh had been on bail for several years without further offending and expressed remorse, stating, “He knows he is going to receive a lengthy sentence.

He is thoroughly ashamed of what he has done, he wishes it had never happened.

His main wish is that the complainant will get past this when she gets older.” Ultimately, Recorder Kelly sentenced Greenhalgh to eight years in prison.

He will be required to serve two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole, rather than the usual half.

Additionally, Greenhalgh was placed on the sex offender register and issued a lifelong sexual harm prevention order (SHPO), marking a significant step in safeguarding the community from further harm.
