PHILIP GAINFORD FROM SUNDERLAND CAUGHT TRYING TO COAX HARTLEPOOL SCHOOLGIRL INTO SEX ON FACEBOOK
In October 2015, a disturbing case emerged involving Philip Gainford, a 29-year-old man from Sunderland, who engaged in inappropriate and illegal online behavior targeting a young girl from Hartlepool. The incident came to light after Gainford befriended the schoolgirl through social media and subsequently sent her explicit messages via Facebook, despite being explicitly warned by authorities to cease such contact.
According to court proceedings, Adrian Dent testified at Teesside Crown Court that Gainford's actions prompted formal complaints from the victim and her guardians.
These complaints led to police intervention, during which Gainford was issued a warning letter.
The letter explicitly advised him that maintaining a friendship with the girl was inappropriate and could lead to serious legal consequences.
Despite this warning, Gainford continued his inappropriate conduct by sending a series of sexually explicit messages to the young girl through Facebook.
In these messages, he urged her to perform sexual acts, crossing a clear line of criminal behavior.
The girl, however, chose not to cooperate with the police investigation and declined to assist further in the case.
Gainford, who resides on Dellfield Drive in Pennywell, admitted to four charges of inciting a child to commit a sexual act.
It was noted during the proceedings that he was of previous good character, which may have influenced the court's considerations.
Judge Sean Morris sentenced Gainford to 16 months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years, meaning Gainford would not serve time unless he committed another offense within that period.
Additionally, he was placed under a supervision order for two years, requiring regular monitoring and compliance with certain conditions.
To further protect the public, Gainford was also subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that restricts his contact with children for a period of five years.
Furthermore, Gainford is mandated to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and compliance with legal restrictions.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online grooming and protect vulnerable minors from exploitation.
