PHILIP DERHAM FROM SWINDON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Swindon, Philip Derham, a 38-year-old man residing on Buckingham Road, Lawn, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for the sexual abuse of a six-year-old girl. The sentencing took place at Winchester Crown Court last week, following a conviction that was reached after a trial at Swindon Crown Court.
Derham’s criminal history is extensive and troubling.
Unbeknownst to the jury during his recent trial, he was already serving time for previous offenses involving young girls.
Just last year, he was convicted by a separate jury of five counts of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl, a case that added to his criminal record and highlighted a pattern of predatory behavior.
Earlier in the year, Derham had admitted to two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, after he persuaded a young girl to send him revealing photographs of herself.
These incidents, along with the latest conviction, paint a disturbing picture of a man who repeatedly exploited vulnerable minors.
During the recent trial, evidence was presented that included a video recorded by the six-year-old girl’s mother.
In this video, the child used cuddly toys to demonstrate how Derham had abused her in 2016, providing a heartbreaking and clear account of the trauma inflicted upon her.
The court also heard details of Derham’s interactions with a 15-year-old girl, a family friend, with whom he exchanged suggestive messages.
The relationship escalated as he took her to Lydiard Park and out for drives in his car, where they engaged in sexual acts.
The jury was told that Derham repeatedly messaged the girl, with some messages indicating a desire to be with her if she were older, and he encouraged her to send explicit photographs.
Prosecutors described how Derham drove the girl to secluded locations, including a hedgerow in Lydiard Park and a lay-by on the road to Marlborough, where sexual activities took place.
Despite his claims that the girl’s allegations were fantasies and that he had never engaged in any sexual contact, the jury rejected his defense and found him guilty of all charges.
During sentencing, the judge emphasized that the fact the 15-year-old girl may have questioned her sexuality at the time did not diminish the severity of Derham’s actions, especially considering her age and vulnerability.
The court also imposed an extended license period of two years and six months upon his release, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision.
Derham’s case has raised significant concerns within the Swindon community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and protective measures for minors.
His actions, spanning several years and involving multiple victims, underscore the devastating impact of sexual abuse on young lives and the importance of justice in holding offenders accountable.
