WORKINGTON PENSIONER WITH DEMENTIA PLACED ON SEX OFFENDER REGISTER AFTER ABUSE VERDICT
A Workington pensioner suffering from dementia has been placed on the Sex Offender Register following a jury's conclusion that he committed sexual abuse against two children.
Philip Alfred Callow, aged 69, was deemed unable to face a criminal trial due to his degenerative brain condition.
Nevertheless, after hearing evidence, a Carlisle Crown Court jury found that he did commit the alleged acts.
These acts included a sexual assault on a girl under 13, two charges of inciting the same girl to engage in sexual activity, engaging in sexual activity in her presence, causing her to look at images of sexual activity, and a further sexual offence against another child.
At the court hearing, Judge Michael Fanning acknowledged the significant impact on the victims but stated that Callow, of Great Clifton, reportedly had no recollection of his offending.
The court was informed that due to his medical condition, Callow likely did not understand what was happening in court.
Consequently, the judge imposed a conditional discharge but emphasized that Callow would have his name entered on the national Sex Offender Register for five years.
Throughout the proceedings, the defendant showed no reaction.
The case highlights the mental health challenges faced by offenders with degenerative conditions but also underscores the severity of the sexual offences committed.
