Petersfield Rapist
A man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for raping a 30-year-old woman in Petersfield. Petru-Gabriel Dumea, 27, of Chapel Street, Petersfield, pleaded guilty to the charge at an earlier hearing and was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court.

The court heard that on the evening of Tuesday, August 2, 2021, the woman was socializing at the Black Sheep pub in Petersfield. During her time there, Dumea initiated a conversation with her in the smoking area. Around 11 pm, the woman left the pub to find her husband, and Dumea followed her, claiming her husband was in the nearby kebab shop and offering to walk her there.

Instead of going inside the kebab shop as planned, Dumea forced the woman into his nearby home. Once inside, he attempted to kiss her and urged her to go upstairs. The woman refused and tried to push him away, but Dumea forced her backwards onto the stairs, where he proceeded to rape her.

Later, another man entered the property and confronted Dumea, which allowed the woman to escape. The following morning, she reported the incident to police. Dumea was arrested later that day and charged with one count of rape.

At court, Dumea was sentenced to eight years behind bars and received a five-year extended licence period. Additionally, he is to be registered on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

The victim, now 31, addressed the court regarding the severe impact of the attack on her life. She said, "This crime has had an enormous detrimental effect on all parts of my life. On a personal level, it has completely knocked my self-confidence. I doubt everything and everyone. I feel angry about what happened. As far as I'm concerned, this has ruined my life." She emphasized the lasting and devastating consequences of rape on survivors.

Detective Constable Jack Droy from Hampshire Constabulary's Operation Amberstone team commented: "This was a premeditated attack on a woman Dumea had befriended in order to gain her trust and carry out his callous attack. This was an extremely traumatic ordeal for the woman, and I cannot commend her enough for her bravery and courage in coming forward and sharing what happened, and for her strength throughout the criminal justice process. We understand how difficult it is to report incidents like this, but thanks to her help, we were able to secure a guilty plea and bring this man to justice."

He added, "Our Operation Amberstone team consists of specially trained officers dedicated to providing survivors of rape and sexual offences with the best support during investigation and court proceedings. Rape cases are some of the most complex investigations we handle, and we work closely with CPS Wessex to identify offenders and seek justice for survivors. I hope today’s sentence provides the woman with some closure and reassures our community that justice has been achieved."
