PETER WILKIE SENTENCED IN BURY ST EDMUNDS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON SCHOOLGIRL
In a case that has shocked the community of Bury St Edmunds, Peter Wilkie, a resident of Meadow Road in Barrow, was convicted of a serious sexual offence involving a young girl.The incident, which occurred in August of the previous year, came to light during the investigation, leading to Wilkie’s arrest and subsequent court proceedings.
Wilkie, who pleaded guilty to the charge of sexually assaulting a child, faced the dock at Ipswich Crown Court this week.
The presiding judge, Rupert Overbury, did not hold back in condemning Wilkie’s actions, describing them as “appalling” and deeply disturbing.
The court heard that Wilkie’s motives were linked to personal frustrations within his marriage, as he admitted to assaulting the girl because he was not receiving intimacy from his wife.
During the hearing, Wilkie reportedly told his wife, “If I’m not getting it from you I’ll have to get it from somewhere else,” revealing a troubling mindset behind his actions.
Judge Overbury expressed hope that time might help the victim recover from the trauma, remarking, “One can only hope that because she was so young, time will heal and will erase the memory of that awful event.” The judge also dismissed Wilkie’s attempt to justify his behaviour by claiming that the girl had an itch, describing such an excuse as “rubbish.” Following his conviction, Wilkie was sentenced to 30 months in prison.
The court also imposed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, explicitly banning him from having any contact with girls under the age of 16.
Additionally, Wilkie was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities to protect the community.
Since the offence became known, Wilkie has led a largely isolated life, with neighbours and members of the local community in Bury St Edmunds distancing themselves from him after the details emerged.
His case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals and the serious consequences faced by those who commit such offences.
