In a case that has shocked the local community of Desborough, Peter Smith, a convicted sex offender with a troubling past, has been returned to prison after authorities uncovered disturbing new activity during a routine check.Smith, 43 years old, had previously served time for attempting to abduct two women armed with a knife, an incident that occurred three months apart, and for sexually assaulting one of his victims.
Following his release, he was placed on the sex offender register, a legal requirement that mandated him to keep police informed of his whereabouts and personal details to ensure ongoing monitoring and risk management.
On March 15 of this year, police officers visited Smith’s residence on Braybrooke Road in Desborough as part of their routine compliance checks.
During this visit, they discovered evidence that Smith had engaged in further deceptive and potentially dangerous behavior.
It was revealed that he had created an alias on the popular au pair website, aupair.com, under the false identity of a single mother named Alex.
This fabricated profile was used to attract and communicate with individuals seeking au pair positions, thereby exploiting the platform for personal gain under false pretenses.
Further investigations showed that Smith had continued his deception by transferring conversations from the online platform to WhatsApp, where he maintained the illusion of being a woman.
This behavior raised serious concerns about his intentions and his adherence to the conditions of his release.
As a result, Smith was charged with two counts of failing to comply with the notification requirements imposed on sex offenders.
These charges reflect his failure to properly inform authorities about his activities and whereabouts, which is a breach of the legal obligations placed upon him.
During a court hearing, magistrates found Smith guilty of these violations and sentenced him to an additional 12 months in prison.
In addition to his custodial sentence, he was ordered to pay costs amounting to £85 and a surcharge of £187, which is designated to support victim services.
