CHELMSFORD PAEDOPHILE PETER RICHARDSON CAUGHT TRYING TO MEET 15-YEAR-OLD FOR SEX IN BISHOP ROAD
In a case that has shocked the community of Chelmsford, Peter Richardson, a 48-year-old man from the town, narrowly avoided imprisonment after attempting to arrange a sexual encounter with a minor.The incident unfolded when Richardson was caught in the act outside a hotel in Chelmsford city centre, following a series of disturbing online exchanges.
Richardson had been actively communicating via the gay dating app Grindr, where he used the profile name 'Happy sucker'.
Between July 6 and July 7 of the previous year, he engaged in conversations with what he believed was a 15-year-old boy.
During these exchanges, Richardson not only expressed a desire to meet but also made explicit sexual propositions, including asking the supposed minor if he was okay and inquiring about when he would turn 16.
Unbeknownst to Richardson, the individual on the other end of the conversation was not an underage teenager but an undercover investigator from the paedophile hunter group CSE Interceptors.
The investigator had set up a decoy account under the alias 'Bored teen' to lure potential offenders into revealing their intentions.
Following a detailed, day-long trial at Basildon Crown Court on July 24, Richardson was found guilty of grooming offences.
The court proceedings revealed the extent of Richardson’s predatory behaviour, with prosecutor Jamie Sawyer describing the messages exchanged.
Sawyer recounted how Richardson initiated the conversation with explicit language, asking, “Want your **** sucked right now?” and continued to pursue the conversation, asking the supposed minor if he was okay and when he would be 16.
During the trial, Sawyer highlighted that Richardson had requested a photograph from the 'Bored teen' account, which was clearly a request for a sexual image.
The court also learned that Richardson was communicating with another profile on Grindr on the same day, claiming to be a 15-year-old and again requesting explicit images.
Despite these interactions, there was no actual meeting arranged, but the intent was clear.
Richardson’s defence claimed that the messages sent to 'Bored teen' were accidental and intended for someone named Chris.
However, the evidence presented by the prosecution painted a different picture, indicating a deliberate attempt to groom a minor.
Police, acting on a tip-off from the paedophile hunter group, attended Richardson’s residence on Bishop Road in Chelmsford, where he was promptly arrested.
During police interviews, Richardson maintained that he had mistakenly sent the messages to the investigator’s account, asserting that the messages were meant for someone else.
Ultimately, Richardson was sentenced to 20 months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years.
This means he will not serve time immediately but will be under supervision for that period, with the court emphasizing the seriousness of his actions and the potential risk posed to minors in the community.
