GLASGOW TEACHER PETER MCGINNIS GUILTY OF GROOMING 13-YEAR-OLD BOY IN GLASGOW

In September 2013, a disturbing case unfolded in Glasgow involving a local teacher, Peter McGinnis, aged 48, who was found guilty of engaging in the sexual grooming of a 13-year-old schoolboy.

The conviction followed a detailed trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court, where the court heard how McGinnis, who was employed as an English teacher, developed a troubling relationship with the young student and his family.

McGinnis first met the boy during his time as a teacher at a Glasgow school.

Over time, he built a rapport with the student, offering extra help with schoolwork near the end of the 2009 school term.

What initially appeared to be innocent academic assistance soon took a darker turn, as McGinnis began inviting the boy to his home in South Lanarkshire, where they spent time alone together.

The court was told that McGinnis took the boy on trips during school holidays, including overnight stays at a hotel and a log cabin, activities that raised serious concerns.

The young teenager claimed that during these visits, they would drink alcohol together, and on two occasions, he stayed overnight at McGinnis’s residence, sharing a room with him.

The boy recounted that he would go to McGinnis’s house, where they would consume alcohol, and that he had spent nights away with the teacher in the log cabin and hotel.

McGinnis, however, insisted he was merely a family friend and denied any inappropriate conduct.

During the trial, he stated, “I was a friend of the family I wasn’t there in the position as a teacher.” Prosecutor Cassie Scott questioned McGinnis about the appropriateness of taking a pupil away for overnight stays, especially to a log cabin.

McGinnis responded that, “In the circumstances at the time I found it appropriate.” The court was shown a photograph of the teenager holding a bottle of beer, which the defendant denied providing.

He also admitted to taking the boy to a hotel for an overnight stay and sharing a room with him on that occasion.

Matters came to light in March 2010 when the boy confided in a family member about the inappropriate relationship.

Following this revelation, McGinnis was arrested and brought before the court.

The judge, Sheriff John McCormick, described the case as involving an “insidious” breach of trust, emphasizing the teacher’s role in “inveigling” himself into the family’s life.

Given the nature of the charges, the sheriff indicated that a custodial sentence was almost inevitable.

As a result of the conviction, McGinnis was remanded in custody and placed on the Sex Offenders Register.

His sentencing was deferred until the following month, allowing for further legal proceedings.

The case has left a significant mark on the community in Glasgow, highlighting the dangers of abuse of trust by individuals in positions of authority.
