PETER MCCONVILLE FROM MANCHESTER SENTENCED FOR GROOMING A 13-YEAR-OLD IN SICK ONLINE PLOT
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming, Peter McConville, a 29-year-old man from Harpurhey in Manchester, has been sentenced to prison for attempting to engage in sexual activity with a minor he believed to be 13 years old.The incident unfolded through an online chat-room where McConville sought to establish a relationship with a girl he thought was a young teenager named Sienna.
According to court proceedings, McConville expressed a desire to make new friends during the COVID-19 lockdown period, but his intentions quickly turned sinister.
Prosecutor Mark Kellet detailed that McConville used the Kik Finder app between June 25 and July 29 of the previous year to communicate with the supposed minor.
To conceal his true identity, a police officer had created an undercover profile on the platform, claiming to be Sienna, a 13-year-old girl residing in Manchester.
The profile indicated that Sienna was seeking friends and explicitly stated she did not want any inappropriate or 'dirty' chats.
Despite this, McConville engaged in increasingly graphic and sexual conversations with the undercover officer, asking to see a picture of Sienna and then requesting to see his own genitalia.
He further suggested that Sienna could perform sexual acts on him and insisted she wear a thong if they were to meet.
Throughout their exchanges, McConville spoke explicitly about penetrative sex and made it clear that if they became a couple, she would need to keep their relationship secret.
He explained that this secrecy was necessary because of the age difference and the potential legal trouble he could face.
On July 29, McConville traveled into Manchester City Centre, believing he was about to meet Sienna in person.
However, law enforcement officers were waiting for him and promptly arrested him upon his arrival.
The police had been monitoring the online conversations and acted swiftly to prevent any harm.
McConville pleaded guilty to a charge of facilitating or arranging the commission of a child sexual offence.
His sentencing included a prison term of two years and two months.
Additionally, he was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
During the sentencing, Judge Michael Leeming expressed his belief that McConville's intentions were to engage in penetrative sexual activity with a girl he thought was 13, underscoring the seriousness of the offence and the potential harm involved.
