Caister Child Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the community of Caister-on-Sea and the wider Suffolk area, Peter Leggett, a 44-year-old man from Caister, was sentenced to six years in prison for the sexual assault of a young girl aged nine. The incident, which took place over a period of three months, involved serious allegations that led to a lengthy legal process culminating in a conviction.

Leggett had initially denied seven separate charges of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13. However, after a trial held last year, a jury found him guilty of all charges. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the case, including how Leggett had groomed the young victim over an extended period, exploiting her trust and innocence.

At Ipswich Crown Court on a Friday, Judge John Devaux delivered the sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Leggett’s actions. The judge noted that Leggett had shown no remorse for his conduct and had deliberately groomed the girl, who was from Suffolk, during the three months leading up to his arrest. The court also ordered Leggett to be subject to a sexual offences prevention order until further notice, a measure designed to restrict his future interactions and protect the community.

Furthermore, Leggett was mandated to register as a sex offender for life, a requirement that underscores the seriousness of his crimes. It was also noted that he had no prior convictions, which made the case particularly troubling for the authorities and the community.

During the trial, the court heard how police officers interviewed Leggett after the victim disclosed the abuse to her mother. The defense, represented by Joanne Eley, argued that her client had learning difficulties and continued to deny the allegations of sexual assault. She also pointed out that there was no evidence to suggest Leggett had been grooming any other children, attempting to mitigate the perception of his character.

As the community processes this case, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of vulnerable children and reinforcing the importance of vigilance and protective measures against such heinous crimes.
