Tooting Child Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Tooting community, Peter John Hogan, a 70-year-old private maths tutor, was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offences committed against young girls at his residence in Tooting. The sentencing took place at Kingston Crown Court on Monday, 23 September, following a conviction that was reached by a majority verdict on 9 August after a rigorous 14-day trial.

Hogan was found guilty of multiple serious charges, including four counts of sexual assault against a girl under the age of 13, with victims aged between 9 and 12. Additionally, he was convicted of one count of engaging in sexual activity with a child over 13, and two counts of indecent assault involving a girl under 14, one of whom was only 8 years old at the time of the abuse. The court also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) on Hogan, which prohibits him from having any unsupervised contact with individuals under the age of 18. Furthermore, Hogan will be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life, reflecting the severity of his crimes.

The court proceedings revealed that Hogan’s abuse took place during his work as a private maths tutor. The victims, whose ages ranged from eight to 13 years old at the time, were subjected to his misconduct at his home in Tooting. The investigation was initiated by detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Child Abuse and Sexual Offences (CASO) unit in June 2016, after one of the victims, a 13-year-old girl, disclosed the abuse to her teacher. It was established that she had been victimized over a three-year period while receiving tutoring from Hogan at his residence.

Further police inquiries uncovered additional victims, including a woman now in her late 20s who came forward to assist authorities. She was approximately eight years old when the abuse occurred, which was between 1995 and 1996. This revelation indicated a long history of misconduct spanning decades.

Hogan was arrested in June 2016. During police interviews, he denied all allegations of sexual abuse. On 16 January, he was formally charged with four counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching, one count of engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15, and two counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14. Hogan entered a plea of not guilty to all charges during a hearing at Kingston Crown Court on 18 March, but the evidence presented in court ultimately led to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.
