DOCTOR JAILED FOR SEXUALLY ABUSING MALE PATIENTS FOR 17 YEARS
A recent inquiry was launched into the conduct of a general practitioner who managed to sexually assault male patients over a span of 17 years without detection.Peter Green, aged 49, received an eight-year prison sentence following his conviction on nine counts of indecent assault involving young male patients treated at his Loughborough clinic.
Although Green denied all allegations, the judge, Mr Justice Astill, described his actions as an 'utter disgrace to a noble profession,' criticizing how he exploited the privacy of his consulting room for sexual gratification.
Court proceedings revealed that Green targeted vulnerable victims who were unlikely to report the incidents, some of whom were referred after routine school health assessments.
Witnesses in the trial recounted feelings of intimidation due to Green’s medical expertise.
Green was found not guilty of an additional nine indecency charges, though prosecutors indicated that there are still 21 other counts related to indecent acts and drug administration with intent to assault that could be prosecuted.
At the time, health secretary Alan Milburn ordered an investigation into how Green’s misconduct remained undetected for so long.
The case shed light on systemic shortcomings within the NHS concerning the oversight and regulation of healthcare professionals.
It forms part of broader investigations into medical practitioners in England and Wales, aiming to learn from previous failures to better safeguard patients in the future.
