PETER GIBSON SENTENCED IN BELFAST FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES
In a significant case that has drawn considerable attention in Belfast, Peter Gibson, a 42-year-old man with no fixed address, was brought before Belfast Crown Court to face serious charges related to the possession and distribution of child abuse images.The proceedings revealed that Gibson had been involved in copying indecent images of children onto blank DVDs, a crime that underscores the disturbing nature of his offenses.
The police intervention occurred on April 29, 2013, when officers visited Gibson’s residence as part of an ongoing assessment of his management under a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO).
It is important to note that the police did not arrive at his home due to any immediate suspicion of suspicious activity but as part of routine monitoring mandated by his previous legal restrictions.
During the search, law enforcement officials seized several items, including two DVDs that contained multiple indecent images of children.
The court was informed that Gibson had recorded these images onto the DVDs himself, which contained a total of 13 images along with a video.
This act of copying and possessing such material is a grave offense, highlighting the severity of his actions.
Gibson’s legal situation was further complicated by his prior status under the SOPO, which was in place at the time of his arrest.
Since his detention, he has remained in custody, having spent approximately 14 months behind bars.
His case was brought before Judge Paul Ramsey, who delivered the sentence that would serve as a warning to others involved in similar crimes.
Judge Ramsey sentenced Gibson to three years of probation, a measure intended to monitor his behavior and prevent further offenses.
Additionally, Gibson was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of five years, a requirement that involves regular updates to authorities and restrictions on contact with minors.
The court also imposed a new five-year SOPO, which explicitly bans him from having any contact with children, reflecting the serious concern about his potential risk to the community.
