PETER EDWARDS FROM MANCHESTER SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR MULTIPLE RAPE OFFENSES IN LIVERPOOL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Peter Edwards, a man from Manchester, was convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young girl.The incidents took place over a period of two to three years in Culcheth, a village near Manchester, where Edwards repeatedly assaulted the minor under the age of 18.
Edwards, aged 40, appeared before Liverpool Crown Court last Friday via a video link to face sentencing after being found guilty in July of 12 counts of child rape.
The court heard harrowing details of the abuse, which left the victim suffering from depression and anxiety, as revealed in her personal statement.
Prosecutor Charlotte Kenny emphasized the emotional toll the crimes had taken on the young girl, highlighting the long-lasting trauma inflicted upon her.
During the trial, the court was informed that Edwards had manipulated the victim by claiming she was 'helping him.' He reportedly threatened to pester, beg, cajole, and nag her into compliance, exerting psychological pressure to maintain control over her.
The court heard how Edwards showed a blatant lack of remorse, with Judge David Swinnerton criticizing his attitude during the proceedings.
The judge observed Edwards raising his eyebrows and shaking his head via the video link, noting that such gestures were indicative of his indifference.
Judge Swinnerton made it clear that Edwards had demonstrated no empathy for his victim, stating, “You have shown no victim empathy.” The court also heard Edwards dismiss concerns about how the victim felt, with him reportedly saying, “I don’t care.” Furthermore, Edwards made disturbing comments suggesting that the victim would 'get what she deserves' and expressed hatred towards her.
The judge condemned his actions, stating, “You took, in effect, her childhood by sexually abusing her.” As a result of his conviction, Edwards was sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender, and a Restraining Order along with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed on him indefinitely to protect the victim and prevent further harm.
The case underscores the severity of the crimes committed and the justice served in response to such a grave violation of a young girl’s innocence.
