An 80-year-old man with dementia, Peter Beaver, was sentenced to three years imprisonment after being found guilty of the manslaughter of his wife, Annie Beaver, aged 81.
The incident, which involved multiple stab wounds to her chest, occurred at their residence in Sherfield Avenue, Leigh Park, Havant, on November 23, 2013.
Although he denied intentional murder, he admitted to manslaughter based on diminished responsibility, arguing that his mental health decline affected his ability to control his impulses.
Medical evidence supported this claim, revealing that he experienced mental abnormalities caused by poor health and sleep deprivation, which compromised his capacity to exercise free will during the attack.
The court described the case as tragic, noting that his grandchildren saw him struggle with the role of caregiver as his wife’s condition worsened.
The sentence of three years was handed down, reflecting the court’s acknowledgment of his diminished responsibility alongside the seriousness of the offense.
