PETER BARBER SENTENCED IN PETERBOROUGH FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND ONLINE SEXUAL OFFENSES
A 71-year-old man from Norburn in Bretton, Peterborough, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of possessing an extensive collection of indecent images and videos depicting children, some of which included the most severe category of abuse. The conviction follows a detailed investigation by law enforcement authorities into Barber’s disturbing online activities, which revealed a pattern of heinous offenses involving the exploitation and sexual abuse of minors.
On Tuesday, September 17, at Peterborough Crown Court, Judge Grey handed down a 13-year prison sentence to Peter Barber, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes.
The case was brought to light after police officers responded to reports that an indecent image of a child had been uploaded to the internet, prompting a search of Barber’s residence.
During the search, authorities discovered a mobile device containing what Judge Grey described as an “extensive library of indecent images of children.” This collection included over 3,700 images and videos classified as ‘category A,’ which is the most severe classification, indicating the worst form of child abuse material.
Additionally, there were nearly 1,900 files in category B and just under 2,700 in category C.
The content was organized under disturbing labels such as “10yo and fat man” and “rape,” highlighting the depravity of the material Barber had stored.
Further investigation revealed that Barber had also purchased and accessed indecent images online using a second phone, which he had discarded to conceal his activities.
During sentencing, Judge Grey condemned Barber’s actions, particularly noting the most serious offense involved arranging or facilitating the sexual exploitation of a child under 13.
The judge recounted how Barber communicated with a woman online, who claimed her 12-year-old daughter was available for abuse.
Barber requested and received indecent images and videos of the girl from the woman.
In addition to these exchanges, Barber admitted to engaging in sexual conversations with three 12-year-old children via the messaging app Telegram.
He received and sent indecent images and videos involving minors and himself.
Alarmingly, Barber also suggested to one of the children that he might meet her in person, a chilling example of an adult attempting to exploit a minor for sexual gratification, as described by the judge.
Judge Grey did not hold back in condemning Barber’s character, criticizing his claims of religious faith as a facade.
He stated, “You make claims of a profound Christian faith, which normally works to prevent you from offending.
But you say that, when a switch goes in your mind for some reason, lust takes over and you are, in effect, unable to control yourself.
That is simplistic, self-serving nonsense.
It might suffice as an excuse for a short-lived or isolated lapse, but what the court is dealing with here is many months during which your overwhelming focus was to obtain sexual gratification by watching young children being raped and otherwise abused in the most degrading and despicable ways.” The judge further described Barber as an irredeemable offender, emphasizing the depth of his depravity and the danger he poses to society.
Barber pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including three counts of making indecent photographs of a child, two counts of attempting to communicate sexually with a minor, three counts of distributing indecent images, and additional charges related to possession of extreme and prohibited images.
His sentence also accounts for six breaches of a sexual harm prevention order and failure to comply with notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register.
Law enforcement officials, including PC Emily Heriot from the MOSOVO unit, highlighted the seriousness of Barber’s continued efforts to conceal his offending.
Heriot stated, “Barber went to great efforts to conceal his continued sexual offending, with complete disregard for his sexual harm prevention order and notification requirements, which are in place to safeguard the public.
These new convictions reflect the serious risk he poses to children.” Barber’s sentence comprises a nine-year custodial period followed by four years on license, reflecting the court’s determination to protect the community from his predatory behavior for the foreseeable future.
