PERCY THRICE OF TUNBRIDGE WELLS SENTENCED TO OVER 13 YEARS FOR SEX OFFENCES
In February 2012, Percy Thrice, a 52-year-old resident of Tunbridge Wells, was sentenced to more than 13 years in prison after admitting to multiple sex offences involving children, described by the court as "beyond imagination for decent people." Thrice, of Bayhall Road, pleaded guilty to 12 charges including rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault against two young victims.Prosecutor Alexandra Ward explained during the proceedings at Canterbury Crown Court that, upon his arrest, Thrice initially denied the offences, expressing "disgust at anyone that would abuse children" and claiming he had no interest in young girls. However, during a subsequent interview, he admitted to the crimes, noting that he appeared to be "unstable" and had contemplated suicide due to the impact of these revelations.
John O’Higgins, representing Thrice, recounted that when questioned by probation staff, Thrice stated, "There must be something wrong with my head." The barrister highlighted that Thrice was overwhelmed upon realising the gravity of his actions, describing it as "the appalled realisation that he has strayed into territory which is frankly beyond imagination for most decent people."
O’Higgins further stated that Thrice acknowledged his motivation was solely sexual and has since taken full responsibility, demonstrating genuine remorse. He emphasized that Thrice is now "a shell of a man," socially isolated and profoundly devastated. The defendant reportedly expressed a desire to make amends by entering treatment and cooperating fully to prevent future harm.
Judge James O’Mahony noted that Thrice's admissions of guilt spared him from an extended prison term of over 20 years. Despite this, the judge determined that Thrice remained a danger to children, sentencing him to 160 months in prison, with an additional five years on extended license.
