In March 2009, a serious case unfolded involving Paul Smith, a 45-year-old resident of Ladymeade Road in Ilminster, who was convicted of possessing indecent images of children. The incident drew significant attention to the dangers of internet-based child exploitation and the failure of some individuals to control their access to such harmful material.
Smith, who was the owner of Seaway Insurance Consultants located in Ilminster, was found to have downloaded illicit images from the internet during hours when his staff had not yet arrived at his office. The court heard that he attempted to shift blame onto two female employees when confronted about the material. One of these employees discovered the images on her work computer and reported her concerns, which led to further investigation.
