PAUL SHIRRA HERNE BAY CHILD SEX IMAGE OFFENDER AVOIDS JAIL

In April 2019, a disturbing case emerged involving Paul Shirra, a man from Herne Bay, who was caught possessing a significant collection of child sexual images.

The incident came to light after police received a tip-off, prompting a swift investigation into Shirra's activities.

Authorities executed a search warrant at Shirra’s parents’ residence on Spenser Road, Herne Bay, on September 18, 2017.

During the raid, officers seized his laptop, which was found to contain a disturbing array of images depicting child sexual abuse.

The digital evidence included a total of 107 images, many of which were classified as Category A, indicating the most graphic and severe content involving the rape of children.

It was revealed that Shirra, who was 36 years old at the time, admitted to using these images for sexual gratification.

His actions and possession of such material drew widespread condemnation, with police and court officials emphasizing the severity of the offense.

At Canterbury Crown Court, Judge Mark Weekes presided over the case and delivered a verdict that, while acknowledging the heinous nature of the images, resulted in Shirra avoiding immediate imprisonment.

The judge described the images as “particularly vile,” emphasizing that each one represented a victim of sexual abuse.

He stated, “Each of those images represents a victim of sexual abuse.

Each of those children shown within those images has suffered an ordeal that would have taken them most of their lives to recover from.” The judge also addressed Shirra directly, saying, “You have contributed — you should hang your head in shame.” Despite the gravity of the offense, Shirra was sentenced to a 13-month jail term, which was suspended for 18 months.

Additionally, he was subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, requiring him to undergo a rehabilitation program and complete 180 hours of unpaid community work.

The court also ordered the confiscation of Shirra’s laptop, ensuring that the device would no longer be used to facilitate such crimes.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, and the serious consequences faced by offenders like Shirra.
