Westhoughton Haydock Sexual Abuser
In December 2011, Paul Shiel, a 42-year-old man recently living in Lyme Street, Haydock, was sentenced for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. Shiel, who had admitted to one count of sexual assault at an earlier hearing, was sentenced to 22 months in prison by Bolton Crown Court. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years and to remain under a sexual offences prevention order (SOPO) for seven years.

The incident occurred on Saturday, April 16, when the girl was at a house in Westhoughton. According to reports, Shiel made various lewd remarks towards her before managing to get her alone in his bedroom, where he sexually assaulted her. The girl later confided in a teacher, who called the police. Shiel was subsequently arrested and charged.

Detective Constable Adam Gleave of Bolton CID commented, "Shiel spent the evening making lewd and inappropriate comments towards the girl before sexually assaulting her the moment he got her on her own. His behaviour that night was appalling and the victim has been left understandably upset at what happened. I hope the fact he has been brought to justice is of some comfort to her and her family."

As of November 2015, Shiel was living back in Westhoughton.
