PAUL O’MARA SENTENCED IN HALIFAX FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AFTER CARE FOR DEMENTIA-STRICKEN MOTHER
In August 2022, a disturbing case unfolded in Bradford Crown Court involving Paul O’Mara, a resident of Halifax, who was convicted of heinous sexual offenses against a young girl. The court heard that O’Mara, aged 44, was found guilty by a jury of multiple sex crimes, including forcing the underage victim to perform oral sex and committing two additional sexual assault acts.
The victim, whose identity remains protected, was described as particularly vulnerable, and her inability to resist or escape the abuse was emphasized during the proceedings.
Initially, Judge Ahmed Nadim chose to delay the sentencing to allow O’Mara time to make arrangements for the care of his mother, who suffers from dementia.
This decision was described by the court as an act of mercy, reflecting the judge’s consideration for the defendant’s personal circumstances.
O’Mara, who resides on Mixenden Road in Halifax, was granted bail during this period, providing him with the opportunity to organize proper care for his elderly mother.
However, upon returning to court, O’Mara was sentenced to nine years in prison for his crimes.
The judge condemned his actions, stating that the victim was particularly vulnerable and that she had been unable to defend herself during the assault.
Judge Nadim highlighted that O’Mara’s violation had further damaged the girl’s confidence, adding a layer of psychological harm to the physical abuse.
During the sentencing, the court noted that O’Mara was heavily intoxicated at the time of the offenses.
Despite his previous good character, the judge expressed difficulty in understanding how he became involved in such serious offending.
Barrister Jayne Beckett, representing O’Mara, pointed out that his imprisonment would significantly impact his 80-year-old mother, who is suffering from dementia, and that the delay in sentencing was intended to give him a chance to care for her.
As part of his sentence, O’Mara will serve a minimum of six years behind bars.
Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender with the police for the remainder of his life.
He will also be subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which explicitly prohibits him from having any contact with girls under the age of 16.
The case underscores the serious consequences of sexual offenses and highlights the ongoing need for protection of vulnerable individuals in the community.
