PAUL MORGAN AND HORRIFIC CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN SOMERSET
A 52-year-old man from Yeovil, Somerset, has been sentenced to prison for a series of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl. The court heard that Paul Morgan engaged in an extended and manipulative campaign of grooming that began when the victim was just 13 years old.
Over a period of more than two years, Morgan exploited her vulnerability and took advantage of her young age to exert control through coercion and threats.
Morgan’s predatory behavior included sending a substantial number of sexually explicit messages, which served to normalize his misconduct and establish an abusive pattern.
He had physical sexual encounters with the girl more than fifty times, ranging from her age of 13 up to 16.
During his sentencing, the court was informed that he also manipulated the young victim into apologizing for his actions, further exerting psychological control.
His actions caused devastating consequences for the girl, who described in her statement how her childhood had been shattered by his obsessive and deviant conduct.
The prosecution's case revealed that Morgan was 47 when he commenced his illegal relationship.
The evidence showed that he initiated contact through inappropriate messaging, gradually escalating to full sexual contact.
When authorities discovered sexualized images of the girl on Morgan’s phone, he responded by wrongly blaming her for the images.
When she confronted him about ending the abuse, Morgan’s behavior deteriorated — he was reported to have screamed, cried, and threatened to take his own life to garner sympathy.
The girl later found the courage to reveal the abuse in April 2021, which led to Morgan’s arrest and eventual conviction.
She now suffers from severe anxiety and experiences flashbacks, symptoms that have significantly impaired her teenage years and overall well-being.
Her presence in court to witness her attacker’s sentencing marked a crucial moment of justice.
In his defense, lawyer Mr.
Harry Ahuja acknowledged Morgan’s remorse and acceptance of responsibility.
The lawyer emphasized Morgan’s ongoing support from his family, including an elderly father with dementia and a mother he helps care for.
Ahuja remarked that his client’s conduct was entirely uncharacteristic and indicated a desire to move forward from his past actions once he is released from prison.
However, the judge, Mr.
Paul Cook, condemned Morgan’s actions severely.
He detailed how Morgan's grooming and manipulation had taken place over an extensive period and involved a significant disparity in age, emphasizing the calculated nature of the abuse.
His behavior was characterized as a deliberate and sustained campaign of sexual exploitation.
Morgan pleaded guilty to six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child and one count of communicating sexually with a child, which earned him a reduced sentence of seven years — a punishment that includes some period on license.
Additionally, the court mandated that Morgan must sign the sex offenders register for life and imposed a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
The judge underscored the gravity of the crimes, highlighting the profound impact on the victim while stressing the importance of safeguarding public interests.
