PAUL MCMILLAN GUILTY OF SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN GLENROTHES AND KIRKCALDY, FIFE
A man named Paul McMillan has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of carrying out serious sexual offenses against two women in the region of Fife, specifically in the towns of Glenrothes and Kirkcaldy.McMillan, who previously resided in Brodie Court, Glenrothes, was convicted of multiple counts of sexual assault following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. The court heard that he subjected one woman to repeated acts of rape at various addresses within Glenrothes during the years 2010 and 2011. The second victim endured a single, yet equally traumatic, assault in 2017, during which she was physically assaulted and sexually attacked.
During the assault, the second woman was punched in the head, forcibly grabbed, and her face was pushed onto a sofa, illustrating the violent nature of the attack. Despite denying the charges initially, McMillan was convicted by a jury of three counts of rape. The Crown had also presented additional allegations of physical assault, but these were later withdrawn.
In delivering the sentence, the presiding judge, Lord Boyd of Duncansby, emphasized that he could not ignore McMillan’s prior criminal record, which included multiple convictions for domestic abuse. The judge noted that a background report described McMillan as possessing a “strong sense of entitlement,” which appeared to influence his criminal behavior.
While acknowledging that McMillan now seemed to accept some responsibility for his actions, Lord Boyd remarked that his behavior was “completely awful” and had brought him shame. The judge expressed a cautious optimism, stating that McMillan appeared to regret his actions and was willing to participate in rehabilitation programs aimed at addressing his conduct.
McMillan’s defense solicitor advocate, Krista Johnston, highlighted that although her client had a history of offending, he had never previously served a prison sentence. She described him as “a fairly isolated, introverted individual” who had been bullied during his school years. Johnston also noted that McMillan was eager to engage in change programs and was deemed suitable for rehabilitation.
Furthermore, McMillan was informed that he would be registered on the sex offenders register indefinitely, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Lesley Couper from Fife’s Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit commented on the case, stating, “Paul McMillan subjected these women to periods of emotional and sexual abuse. He has demonstrated himself to be a callous individual with no remorse for the impact his crimes have had on his victims.” She also praised the bravery of the victims for coming forward, which was instrumental in securing the convictions and bringing justice to the affected women.
