PAUL MCKENZIE FLEEING TO CZECH REPUBLIC TO AVOID CHILD ABUSE IMAGE CHARGES AT OXFORD CROWN COURT
In January 2018, Paul McKenzie, a man with no fixed address, was sentenced to a total of three years and four months in prison following his conviction related to child abuse image offences. The case against him was marked by his attempt to evade justice by fleeing the country, which ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent sentencing.
McKenzie was initially charged with two counts: one for distributing indecent images of children and another for possessing such images.
These charges stemmed from allegations that he had engaged in the creation and dissemination of inappropriate material involving minors.
The charges were scheduled to be tried at Oxford Crown Court, with the trial set for September 9, 2016.
However, McKenzie failed to appear in court on that date, prompting authorities to launch a manhunt for him.
It was later discovered that McKenzie had fled the United Kingdom and traveled to the Czech Republic in an apparent attempt to avoid prosecution.
His disappearance caused significant concern among law enforcement agencies, who worked diligently to locate him.
Eventually, he was apprehended while abroad and was remanded back into custody to face the charges in the UK.
In October of the previous year, McKenzie pleaded guilty to both counts of distributing and possessing indecent images of children during a hearing at Oxford Crown Court.
Despite this, he initially denied a third charge related to possessing indecent photographs of a child for show, but he later changed his plea.
During a subsequent hearing conducted via videolink, McKenzie admitted to this final count as well.
Adding to the complexity of the case, McKenzie's ex-partner, Phoebe McKenzie, residing at Winterborne Close, Bicester, was convicted in August of assisting him in his efforts to evade justice.
She was found guilty of perverting the course of public justice by providing financial support to McKenzie while he was on the run.
Court records revealed that she paid him approximately £2,400 between September 8, 2016, and January 9, 2017, during his period of flight.
McKenzie is scheduled to be sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on January 16, with the court likely to impose a significant custodial sentence given the nature of the offences and his attempt to evade justice.
The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and ensure that offenders are held accountable, regardless of their attempts to escape legal proceedings.
