PAUL MCGIVERN OF GREATER MANCHESTER SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL IMAGE OFFENSES
In June 2003, Paul McGivern, a man from Greater Manchester, faced a court for amassing and possessing indecent images of children. Described as possibly the heaviest man to ever appear in a British courtroom, McGivern, aged 42, had become a recluse due to his obesity, which had caused his weight to surpass 40 stone.McGivern was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Manchester Crown Court after admitting to using special software to search the internet for movies, music, and explicit images. Authorities found he had burned 58 indecent images of children onto a CD. Police also discovered additional indecent material on his computer, including six more images and video clips, as well as content in the recycle bin.
The police investigation revealed that the images depicted graphic sexual acts, with officers from the Abusive Images Unit believing that one of the victims was as young as five. McGivern was also placed on the sex offenders register for ten years.
His court appearance highlighted his reclusive lifestyle; he had reportedly broken three cinema seats during an outing. His defense, represented by Stuart Neale, explained that fitting him with an electronic tag was impossible because "it simply would not fit." Neale commented, "He may be the most obese man ever to appear in a court in Britain. Prison for him would be infinitely worse than for any other able-bodied man. He is a man under virtual house arrest and has hardly been out of the door for months, if not years."
McGivern, who lived in South Manchester, was arrested in March and charged with making and possessing indecent images of children. The investigation revealed he used Kazaa file-sharing software to download music, pirated videos, and images from the internet.
During the sentencing, Judge Anthony Ensor remarked, "I am in no doubt there is only one place for people like you. These are disgusting and revolting offences."
McGivern’s wife, who is suffering from progressive cancer, was present at the hearing to hear her husband's sentence. She appeared visibly shaken but chose not to comment publicly.
