PAUL LEIGHTON OF SEAHAM SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR ONLINE CHILD SEX ABUSE AND BLACKMAIL

In a case that has sent shockwaves across the UK and beyond, Paul Leighton, a 32-year-old man from Seaham, County Durham, has seen his prison sentence significantly increased after a series of heinous crimes involving online child exploitation.

Originally sentenced to 16 years for a range of offences, the Court of Appeal has now raised his term to 20 years, citing the grave severity of his actions and the manipulative tactics he employed.

Leighton was convicted of 21 separate offences, which included three counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault on girls under the age of 13, as well as blackmail and other related crimes.

His criminal activities spanned both online and offline realms, with the court hearing that he had tricked children into sending explicit photographs and then used these images to blackmail them into further abuse, including against their own relatives.

The court was told that Leighton had blackmailed a 14-year-old boy from Florida into repeatedly raping his one-year-old niece.

Leighton threatened to post a video of the abuse online to the boy’s friends if he did not continue to commit acts of abuse against the infant.

The teenager, who has been charged and prosecuted with incest and rape in the United States, is currently awaiting sentencing.

Leighton’s criminal reach extended beyond the United States.

He also blackmailed two teenage girls from Britain and sexually assaulted a nine-year-old girl living in the North East of England.

The FBI is actively investigating other potential victims who may have been targeted by Leighton’s online schemes.

Solicitor General Robert Buckland QC MP criticized the original sentence handed down by Newcastle Crown Court in September, stating that it failed to adequately reflect the gravity of the offences.

He emphasized that Leighton’s method of employing children to carry out acts of abuse, rather than directly engaging in physical acts himself, made the crimes even more sinister and deserving of a harsher penalty.

He pointed out the aggravating factors, including the rapid succession of offences committed over the internet within a short period, and the vulnerability of the victims, some of whom were as young as two years old.

The Court of Appeal, including Lord Justice Holroyde and Sir John Royce, concurred with the assessment that the original sentence was unduly lenient.

In their judgment, the judges highlighted the manipulative and calculated nature of Leighton’s crimes, which involved exploiting adolescent victims through online communication and blackmail.

They noted the disturbing detail that some victims were coerced into attacking others, including a baby, further underscoring the severity of his actions.

Considering all these factors, the court concluded that a minimum sentence of 30 years would be appropriate given the circumstances.

However, taking into account Leighton’s guilty pleas, the court ultimately increased his custodial term to 20 years and extended his licence period after release to seven years.

Leighton appeared via video link from HMP Durham, offering no reaction to the sentence extension.

Leighton’s crimes are among the most disturbing in recent history, with police and legal authorities describing him as one of the worst offenders they have encountered.

His case has become a stark reminder of the dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilance in protecting children from exploitation.

The investigation into his activities continues, with authorities in both the UK and the US working to bring additional victims to justice and prevent further harm.
