MANCHESTER POLICE OFFICER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES

A former officer of Merseyside Police, Paul Ledwith, has been formally sentenced after being found guilty of committing serious sexual offences against two women.

The conviction was reached following a detailed trial held at Manchester Crown Court, which examined the disturbing actions of Ledwith during a series of incidents in Liverpool city centre.

Paul Ledwith, aged 49 and residing on Wisteria Way in Bold, appeared in court on Thursday, 17 October.

The court handed down a sentence of 12 months, which was suspended, meaning Ledwith will not serve time in prison unless he commits further offences within the suspension period.

The court's decision was based on evidence that proved Ledwith committed three separate acts of sexual touching in Liverpool during July and August of 2020.

The investigation into Ledwith’s conduct was extensive and involved multiple sources of evidence, including witness testimonies, CCTV footage, and a thorough police inquiry.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy McCourt commented on the case, expressing gratitude to the victims for their resilience and bravery in coming forward.

He emphasized the long and challenging nature of the investigation, which ultimately uncovered Ledwith’s predatory behaviour despite his initial denials and attempts to discredit the victims.

McCourt detailed the impact of Ledwith’s actions, noting that the victims experienced significant fear and distress.

The detective highlighted that the victims’ ordeal extended beyond the initial incidents, as they faced additional emotional strain from having to testify during the trial.

Ledwith’s repeated acts of touching, propositioning, and intimidation demonstrated a blatant disregard for the well-being of the women involved.

His actions took place during a night out in the city centre, where he believed he could act without consequence.

However, the evidence collected, including witness accounts and CCTV footage, proved otherwise.

In addition to the criminal proceedings, Ledwith’s professional conduct was addressed by Merseyside Police.

He resigned from his position on 23 May 2021, prior to a Gross Misconduct Hearing that concluded on 28 May 2021.

The disciplinary process determined that if he had still been employed, he would have been dismissed.

As a result, Ledwith is permanently barred from serving as a police officer in the future.

This disciplinary action was taken before the criminal trial to reinforce the message that abuse of authority and criminal behaviour will not be tolerated within the police force.

The case serves as a stark reminder to law enforcement personnel of the serious consequences that follow misconduct, whether on or off duty, and underscores the importance of maintaining integrity and public trust.
