PAUL KYLE SHANKILL BELFAST CHURCH USHER SEXUALLY ASSAULTS TEEN GIRL

In November 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Paul Kyle, a man from the Highfield area of Belfast, who exploited his position at a local church to commit sexual offenses against a teenage girl.

The incident took place within the premises of the New Life City Church, located in the Shankill area of Belfast, where Kyle served as a member of the welcoming team, a role that involved interacting closely with congregants and creating a friendly environment.

According to court proceedings, Kyle, aged 54 at the time, engaged in inappropriate physical contact with the 15-year-old girl on two separate occasions.

The first incident occurred in June 2017, during a church service, when Kyle hugged the girl.

Following this gesture, he inappropriately touched her breast.

The matter was reported to the church’s pastor, who subsequently warned Kyle to refrain from such conduct in the future.

Despite the warning, Kyle's misconduct was repeated five months later, in November 2017.

During this second incident, the girl was again hugged by Kyle, and as he was releasing her, he touched her breast and then placed his hand between her legs, all over her clothes.

The girl confided in her parents, who reported the incidents to the police on November 22, 2017.

The parents also revealed that concerns about Kyle’s behavior had been raised earlier that year, in June, when they noticed he had made “inappropriate physical contact” with their daughter.

Further details emerged during police interviews.

Kyle, who resides in the Highfield area, initially claimed that he knew the girl but was not friendly with her.

He admitted to hugging her at the church service but insisted it was “just a hug and nothing more.” However, he later pleaded guilty to the charges, with Crown lawyer Kate McKay stating that this change indicated Kyle now accepted the allegations regarding each incident.

The court heard that after the second assault, Kyle attempted to contact the girl via Facebook Messenger, but she did not respond.

The impact of his actions was significant; the girl’s education and emotional well-being were affected, and her trust in the church community was compromised.

The offences, described as being on the “lower end of the scale,” nonetheless caused her distress.

During the trial, defense barrister Ciaran Harvey acknowledged Kyle’s remorse, stating that his client fully apologizes and recognizes the pain caused.

Harvey also highlighted Kyle’s personal struggles, including a very low IQ—placing him in the bottom 2% of the population—along with issues related to stress and anxiety about potential imprisonment.

He revealed that Kyle has turned to alcohol since the incidents, consuming a litre of spirits daily, and is currently experiencing difficulties in his life.

Judge Patricia Smyth, presiding over Belfast Crown Court, emphasized that Kyle’s low IQ might partly explain his offending behavior.

She noted that Kyle’s misuse of his church position to touch the girl was a serious breach of trust and had a lasting impact on her, especially concerning her schooling and her desire to attend church.

The judge also pointed out that Kyle had been warned after the first incident but chose to repeat his misconduct, which demonstrated a troubling pattern.

In sentencing, Judge Smyth imposed a three-year probation order on Kyle, along with a requirement to attend a sexual offending program to address his “distorted thinking.” Additionally, Kyle was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years, reflecting the seriousness with which the court viewed his actions and their impact on the victim.
