In a case that highlights the ongoing issue of domestic abuse, Paul Hughes, a resident of North Shields, has been sentenced to prison for his role in subjecting his partner to severe mental and physical torment.

Hughes, who previously served time for causing death by careless driving in 2018, was found to have continued his pattern of abusive behavior in his personal life, leading to significant fear and distress for his partner.

The court heard that Hughes's actions went beyond mere physical assault.

His partner was subjected to relentless psychological abuse and coercive control, which left her feeling so unsafe that she was compelled to leave her home and relocate to protect herself and her children.

Hughes, aged 39 and residing on Simonburn Avenue in North Shields, pleaded guilty to charges of controlling or coercive behaviour as well as assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In sentencing Hughes, Newcastle Crown Court emphasized the seriousness of his actions, which resulted in a prison term of 38 months.
