PAUL DISNEY FROM SCARBOROUGH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN THREE COUNTRIES
In a case that has shocked the community and drawn widespread attention, Paul Disney, a 56-year-old man originally from the Scarborough area, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of children across multiple countries. The offences spanned over a decade and involved vulnerable young victims in North Yorkshire, Spain, and Vietnam.
Disney was found guilty of abusing seven children, both boys and girls, all aged 10 or under.
The prosecutor, Ian Mullarkey, detailed that most of these children were approximately six years old at the time of the abuse.
The lengthy period over which Disney committed these acts underscores the severity and depravity of his actions, which he described as “acts of sexual depravity spanning many years.” The court heard that Disney’s predatory behavior included abusing a child while on holiday in Spain, where he convinced the child's family to allow him to babysit.
His disturbing pattern of seeking out young victims extended beyond Europe, as he traveled to India and Vietnam, where he visited orphanages.
In Vietnam, Disney took indecent photographs of four children, all around six years old, further illustrating the extent of his criminal activities.
Authorities in North Yorkshire initially arrested Disney for his crimes committed there.
After being released on bail, Disney fled to Vietnam, prompting an international manhunt.
Efforts to extradite him from Vietnam were underway, but Disney reappeared in the UK, where he was subsequently arrested at Cardiff Airport.
His last known address was in Vietnam, and he faced multiple charges, including 16 counts of child-sex offences.
These charges comprised four counts of indecent assault, four counts of downloading indecent images of children, and eight counts of taking indecent photographs of minors.
Following legal proceedings, Disney admitted to all charges after a lengthy legal process that involved resolving issues related to his crimes in Vietnam.
His court appearance for sentencing was marked by a significant public and victim presence, with some of his victims attending to witness justice being served.
Judge Andrew Stubbs QC addressed the court, emphasizing the gravity of Disney’s crimes.
He described the offending as “scale, span and extent” of “acts of sexual depravity spanning many years,” and declared Disney a “dangerous offender.” The judge sentenced Disney to eight years in prison, with an additional two-year extension on licence, which means he will be under supervision after his release.
The judge clarified that Disney would serve two-thirds of his sentence behind bars and would only be released when the Parole Board deems it safe.
In addition to his prison sentence, Disney was subjected to a sexual-harm prevention order aimed at restricting his internet use and contact with children.
He was also handed a five-year ban on foreign travel, which will take effect upon his release.
Furthermore, Disney was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life and ordered to pay £880 in compensation to one of his victims, now an adult male.
This case highlights the disturbing extent of Disney’s criminal activities and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to bring such offenders to justice, regardless of where their crimes are committed or where they attempt to evade capture.
