PAUL DAVIS SENTENCED IN SWANSEA FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE AND POSSESSION OF DEPICTING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IMAGES
A pensioner and well-respected member of the Swansea community, Paul Davis, has been convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl and the possession of numerous abusive images, a court has heard.Davis, 74, groomed his young victim with gifts of sweets and subjected her to sexual assaults.
Additionally, he masturbated in front of a child at Swansea's main leisure centre.
When police were alerted to the incidents, they examined his phone and devices, uncovering over 1,200 images of child abuse—some with children as young as four—and photographs depicting bestiality.
A judge at Swansea Crown Court highlighted that although Davis had a standing in society, his true nature was far from respectable.
Prosecutor Nicola Powell explained that the abuse was brought to light after the young girl disclosed details to her parents, revealing Davis had touched her beneath and over her underwear, often after offering sweets.
An investigation revealed an incident at Swansea's LC leisure centre where Davis had masturbated in front of a child while smiling at her.
Police seized and reviewed Davis’s electronic devices, discovering more than 1,250 indecent images, including 208 videos and photographs classified as Category A, indicating the most severe sexual abuse of children as young as four.
They also found 56 prohibited images, typically cartoon-style depictions of sexual abuse, and 173 extreme pornographic images, such as images of women engaging in sex with animals like horses and dogs.
The mother of Davis’s young victim read a statement to the court, describing the profound impact on her daughter.
She expressed regret over not noticing the abuse earlier but praised her daughter's bravery in reporting it.
Judge Paul Thomas QC reassured her that paedophiles like Davis are devious and advised her not to blame herself, adding, "Tell your daughter I think she is very brave." Davis, formerly of Upper Killay in Swansea and now residing on Heatherslade Road, Southgate, Gower, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including sexual assault of a child under 13, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and possession of indecent images, prohibited images, and extreme pornography.
Defense lawyer Jon Anders stated that Davis had led an industrious and respectable life before these offenses.
He also noted that Davis had sought help from the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, a charity dedicated to preventing child sexual abuse.
Judge Thomas described Davis’s grooming behavior as "classic paedophile behavior" and conveyed that he was a "committed paedophile." He emphasized the contradiction between Davis’s community standing and his true character, citing the letter Davis had written to the court which demonstrated a lack of genuine remorse and an understanding of the harm caused.
The judge described Davis as self-pitying rather than remorseful.
Due to his guilty pleas, Davis was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison.
He will serve up to half of this term before being released on licence and supervised in the community.
He will be a registered sex offender for the next 10 years and was also subject to a sexual harm prevention order preventing him from accessing young girls for the same period.
