PAUL COOK FROM GLASGOW JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Glasgow community, Paul Cook, a resident of Westmuir Street in the Parkhead area, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison after being found in possession of highly disturbing images depicting child abuse.

The case was heard at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week, where Cook admitted to possessing indecent images of children on two separate mobile devices.

Initially, there was a legal debate during the proceedings regarding whether the images in question were classified as 'moving' or 'still' photographs.

This disagreement led to a postponement of the sentencing until the following morning, as the court sought clarity on the nature of the images involved.

Cook, aged 56, also claimed that some of the photographs he downloaded were legal because they originated from a naturist website, attempting to justify his actions.

Between March 2, 2015, and October 26, 2016, Cook was found to have taken or permitted the taking of indecent or pseudo-photographs of children.

The images were downloaded at his residence in the east end of Glasgow, a detail that added to the gravity of the case.

Prosecutor Wendy Wilson, representing Police Scotland’s cyber-crime unit, revealed that officers discovered a total of 67 images on an iPhone 4 belonging to Cook.

Of these, 63 were classified as Category C, which involves less severe material, while four were Category A, indicating the most severe and graphic abuse.

All of the images depicted girls aged between five and 12 years old.

Some of the photographs were described during the court proceedings as showing 'erotic poses,' but the Category A images contained abuse so graphic that they could not be described in detail.

Additionally, authorities found 16 more images on a Smartfast 6 mobile phone, all of which were classified as Category C.

The disturbing content underscores the severity of the offense and the ongoing threat posed by individuals involved in such activities.

During the hearing, Cook’s defense lawyer, Miss Beaumont, informed the court that her client was participating in the 'Stop it Now' programme, a scheme aimed at preventing child abuse.

She also stated that Cook accepted he had a problem and was seeking help.

Despite this, Sheriff Daniel Scullion emphasized Cook’s prior criminal history, noting that he had previously been placed on a three-year probation for a similar offense.

The sheriff also pointed out that Cook had served short periods in prison for two other related cases, highlighting a pattern of offending behavior.

In his sentencing remarks, Sheriff Scullion acknowledged Cook’s previous convictions but also took into account the guilty plea and the fact that the images involved were still photographs, which he considered a significant factor.

He stated, “This is your third conviction for similar offences.

I take the view in the public interest that only a custodial sentence is appropriate.” Ultimately, Cook was sentenced to 14 months in prison, a reduction from an initial 18 months due to his early plea.

Additionally, he will be subject to sex offender registration requirements for the next ten years, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the ongoing risk to the community.
