PAUL CAMMIDGE AND SHOCKING CHILD SEXUAL ENCOUNTERS IN GRIMSBY
A married grandfather from Yorkshire, Paul Cammidge, was caught in a sting operation after attempting to initiate a sexual encounter with a girl who he believed was only 13 years old.The incident was orchestrated by paedophile hunters who lured him into a trap, leading to his subsequent arrest and court proceedings in Hull.
Cammidge, aged 64, had been actively seeking a sexual relationship with the girl by exchanging explicit photographs of himself and discussing plans to meet.
According to reports from our sister publication, the Grimsby Telegraph, he had sent indecent images and suggested that she watch pornography, hinting at an inappropriate and unlawful interest.
His intent was clear, as he expressed a desire to meet up for sex, believing he was communicating with a minor.
The court was told that during online interactions, Cammidge boasted of being a "sugar daddy," describing himself as a "silver fox" and a "wealthy older man" on adult websites.
He went further by calling the decoy girl "delicious and beautiful," and solicited explicit videos and photographs from her.
At the time, he resided in the York area but had offered to travel to the girl's home in Yorkshire, assuring her of discretion.
It later emerged that he had since moved to Grimsby.
During their conversations, Cammidge requested a naked photo and video of the girl, who refused to comply.
Authorities revealed that he instructed her not to tell her mother about their chat and also began deleting the sexually explicit parts of their exchanges, possibly to hide his intentions.
The paedophile hunters involved in the case took action by visiting his home in Grimsby and alerted the police.
Cammidge was subsequently arrested on December 17, 2020.
During police interrogation, he admitted remorse, stating, "Oh, right.
I have done it.
I shouldn't have done it.
I am sorry for doing it.
Can you just let me go?
I should not have got sucked into this silly thing.
What I have done is wrong." Defence counsel Cathy Kioko-Gilligan acknowledged his remorse and explained some background factors, such as his struggles with alcohol following retirement.
She emphasized that Cammidge had no prior record of offending against children and stated that he was initially not seeking out minors but had fallen into this behavior during a difficult period in his life.
She further noted that Cammidge, who had two adult children and grandchildren, was supported by his wife of 38 years.
Despite the shame and shamefulness of his actions, she highlighted his efforts to address his alcohol misuse and addiction issues.
In addressing the court, Judge Mark Bury detailed Cammidge's history, noting his earlier troublemaking days in the 1970s, but also his successful career and stable retirement in his fifties.
The judge condemned his conduct, highlighting the severity of his actions, especially his awareness of the girl’s age and vulnerability.
He described Cammidge’s messages and explicit exchanges as "totally repugnant" and emphasized that the incident was not stopped voluntarily but was thwarted by the intervention of paedophile hunters.
The judge remarked on the widespread problem of adults contacting minors online and stressed that such behavior cannot be tolerated in a civilized society.
Concluding, he sentenced Cammidge to one year in prison and mandated registration as a sex offender for ten years, underscoring the serious harm and risk his actions posed to the young girl and the community.
