PAUL BURTON FROM GLOUCESTER SENTENCED TO 19 YEARS FOR ABUSING YOUNG GIRL IN OXFORDSHIRE VILLAGE
A man named Paul Burton, residing in Gloucester, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 19 years after being convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young female victim.The disturbing case unfolded in an Oxfordshire village, where Burton subjected the girl to a prolonged period of manipulation, coercion, and sexual assault spanning over a decade.
Burton, aged 45 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty on Monday, December 11, following a comprehensive five-week trial at Oxford Crown Court.
His convictions include eight counts of sexual activity with a child, three counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of controlling and coercive behaviour.
The severity and breadth of these charges highlight the extent of his criminal conduct.
Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Burton’s abuse was insidious and calculated.
He exerted insidious pressure on his young victim to engage in sexual acts with him, beginning when she was still a child and continuing for five years.
After this initial period, he continued to manipulate her for an additional five years, employing various tactics to maintain control over her.
Evidence presented in court detailed how Burton filmed some of the sexual assaults, forced her to take contraception, and inundated her with an overwhelming number of messages—up to 490 per day.
He also showed up unannounced at her workplace, further demonstrating his obsessive and controlling behaviour.
During the course of the abuse, the victim experienced multiple pregnancy scares, underscoring the physical and emotional toll of Burton’s actions over the nine-year period.
Despite his attempts to deny responsibility, claiming that it was the victim who had seduced and blackmailed him, the jury dismissed his account, finding him guilty of all charges.
Judge Maria Lamb, presiding over the case, described Burton’s conduct as ‘odious’ and delivered a stern sentence.
She emphasized the gravity of his actions, stating, “She became your trophy.
You began to abuse her, committing the most serious of sexual crimes.
Whether you consider the abuse grooming or controlling her, perhaps it does not matter, as the two, in my view, are two sides of the same coin.
She felt suffocated and referred to herself as your robot.
Your behaviour was self-centred and egotistical.” In a victim impact statement read aloud in court by prosecutor Fern Russell, the young woman detailed the profound psychological scars left by Burton’s abuse.
She revealed that she now suffers from anxiety, depression, and possibly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
She shared her ongoing struggles, saying, “I think about this from the moment I wake up until it’s my last thought before I fall asleep.
I find it hard to trust others or let anyone in.
I’ve found it incredibly difficult emotionally.
I struggle to talk about my emotions and it takes a while to open up.” The victim also described the impact on her life beyond her mental health, including difficulties returning to work and financial hardships caused by the trauma.
Despite her suffering, she expressed hope for justice and healing.
During the sentencing, Burton’s defence lawyer, Nadia Chbat, highlighted that her client had no previous convictions of a similar nature and had behaved ‘excellently’ throughout the court proceedings.
However, the judge noted Burton’s behaviour in court, observing that he was gesticulating in the dock during sentencing.
As he was led away to the cells, Burton shouted, “You’ve got it wrong, I never touched her,” attempting to deny the allegations.
Burton is expected to serve approximately 13 years in prison before being eligible for release on licence, marking a significant chapter in the pursuit of justice for his young victim and a stark reminder of the devastating impact of such crimes.
