Glasgow Rapist
At the High Court in Glasgow, Judge Young KC delivered a stern judgment against Paul Buchan following his conviction on four counts of rape. The court sentenced him to a substantial custodial term of nine years and six months, with an additional three-year extension period, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Young KC provided a detailed account of the heinous nature of Buchan’s offences. The crimes involved multiple instances of sexual assault against two different victims. One particularly disturbing incident took place in the victim’s own home, where Buchan used force and choked her until she lost consciousness. The judge emphasized the brutality and coercive tactics employed, including threats, physical violence, and choking, which left lasting trauma for the victims.

The court also heard evidence of a serious attack on Buchan’s former partner. This assault involved threatening behavior, shouting, and physically pulling her out of bed. The victim was subjected to further sexual offences and abusive conduct, illustrating a pattern of violent and controlling behavior. The judge highlighted that these acts were not isolated but part of a disturbing pattern of domestic violence and sexual misconduct.

Despite Buchan’s previous record, which notably lacked custodial sentences, he has a documented history of domestic offending and repeatedly breaching court orders. A risk assessment presented to the court indicated a moderate to high likelihood of reoffending, raising concerns about public safety and the potential for future harm.

In light of these factors, the court imposed an extended sentence totaling 12 and a half years. The actual time Buchan will serve in custody is calculated at nine and a half years, with the sentence being backdated to account for time already spent on remand and serving previous periods of detention. Additionally, the court issued an order prohibiting Buchan from making any contact with the victims indefinitely. His sex offender registration will be maintained on an indefinite basis, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses.

The judge’s decision underscored the seriousness of the offences committed by Buchan, emphasizing the importance of protecting the public from individuals who pose such risks. The ruling also acknowledged the importance of safeguarding victims and ensuring that offenders like Buchan are held accountable for their actions, with the court’s measures designed to prevent further harm and promote justice.
