PAUL BIRLESON FROM CHESHIRE SENTENCED AFTER CHILD INDECENCY IMAGES DISCOVERY IN NORTHWICH
In a case that has shocked the local community, Paul Birleson, a resident of Cheshire, faced serious criminal charges related to the possession and distribution of indecent images involving children and animals. The investigation was initiated after authorities received reports of suspicious activity linked to Birleson’s Google account, prompting a police raid on his residence in Northwich on July 28, 2022.
During the search, law enforcement officials meticulously examined Birleson’s electronic devices and uncovered a disturbing collection of digital material.
The total number of images found was 529, which included 28 images classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of indecency, along with 115 Category A videos.
The devices also contained 40 images and 89 videos categorized as Category B, and 124 images with 106 videos falling under Category C.
Among these illicit materials, investigators discovered 25 extreme pornographic images involving animals such as dogs and cats.
Further evidence revealed that Birleson had viewed these disturbing images on a television at his home.
Additionally, he had taken a step further in his criminal behavior by sharing one of the Category A images with another individual via WhatsApp, demonstrating a willingness to distribute such material.
Paul Birleson, aged 48, was brought before Chester Crown Court to face justice.
The court proceedings revealed that he had pleaded guilty to seven charges related to the possession and dissemination of indecent images of children and animals.
The prosecution detailed the extent of his offenses, emphasizing the severity of the material involved.
In his defense, Birleson’s legal representative, David Morton, expressed remorse and shame for his client’s actions.
Morton highlighted Birleson’s complicated medical history, including ongoing chemotherapy treatment, and noted that Birleson had no prior criminal record.
The Probation Service assessed him as having a low risk of reoffending.
Morton also pointed out Birleson’s efforts to turn his life around, mentioning his battle with alcoholism, from which he has been sober for nearly 20 months, and his willingness to engage in rehabilitative work.
Despite these mitigating factors, Judge Simon Berkson sentenced Birleson to 24 months in prison, a reduction from the original 30 months due to his early guilty plea.
The sentence was suspended for two years, meaning Birleson would not serve time unless he committed further offenses during this period.
The judge emphasized the gravity of the charges, particularly the distribution of a Category A indecent photograph of a child, which he described as a deeply disturbing offense.
Judge Berkson stated, “Not only do you like to watch child abuse on screens in front of you, but you are prepared to distribute them to others with similar interests.” In addition to the custodial sentence, Birleson was ordered to complete 35 days of rehabilitative activity and a 120-day alcohol monitoring program.
The court also imposed a stringent 15-year sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future activities and protect the community from potential harm.
