PAUL BELL SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST CHILD AND WOMAN IN DURHAM
A man from County Durham, Paul Bell, has been sentenced to imprisonment after being convicted of engaging in sexual activities with a minor and committing sexual assault against a woman.Bell, aged 41, was found guilty of these offenses following a three-day trial at Durham Crown Court last week, despite his initial denial of the allegations.
Bell appeared before the court via video link from HMP Durham for the sentencing hearing.
The court proceedings revealed that the offences occurred while Bell was under the influence of alcohol.
The prosecution, led by Shaun Dodds, presented emotional victim impact statements from both individuals involved.
One victim explained how the incident had severely affected her mental health, leaving her feeling anxious and nervous around others who are drinking.
She expressed that the trauma was so profound that she believed she would never fully recover or forget the experience.
The other victim, a younger girl, shared her fears of not being believed when she disclosed the abuse.
She recounted how the incident had caused her to suffer from sleep disturbances and had negatively impacted her education, further highlighting the lasting effects of Bell's actions.
Ian West, representing Bell, acknowledged that his client had previously been of good character.
However, he also noted that Bell's ability to defend himself was limited because of his conviction, which was the result of the trial proceedings.
Judge James Adkin addressed Bell directly, stating that his actions had inflicted significant trauma and anxiety on the victims.
He emphasized that Bell's intoxicated state at the time does not excuse or diminish the harm caused.
The judge expressed concern over Bell's apparent inability to control his attraction to children, which he described as a troubling aspect of the case.
As a result, Judge Adkin sentenced Bell to a term of 46 months in prison.
In addition to incarceration, Bell was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
A restraining order was also issued to protect the victims from any contact with Bell in the future, along with a lifetime sexual harm prevention order designed to restrict his activities and monitor his behavior.
