PAUL ARMITAGE CAUGHT IN GLOUCESTER AND RUGBY CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL
In a disturbing case that spans the towns of Gloucester and Rugby, Paul Armitage, a 54-year-old man, has been convicted of possessing and downloading indecent images of children.The investigation was triggered when a young boy, one of the sons of Armitage’s girlfriend, grew suspicious of his behavior and decided to examine his computer.
During a routine check at his mother’s residence in Rugby, where Armitage was living at the time, the son discovered what appeared to be inappropriate material on Armitage’s computer.
Concerned about the nature of the content, he promptly contacted the police authorities.
Law enforcement officials responded swiftly, seizing the computer, a hard drive, and a laptop for forensic analysis.
The police investigation revealed a troubling collection of images.
On the computer, officers found a total of 142 images classified as Category C, which depicted girls aged between 10 and 14 in naked or indecent poses, but without any explicit sexual activity.
Among these, there was a particularly serious image of a 13-year-old girl, which had been copied across multiple devices and classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of concern.
Paul Armitage, who now resides at Southfield Court in Gloucester, was arrested and brought before Warwick Crown Court.
During the proceedings, he pleaded guilty to four charges of making indecent images of children.
Prosecutor Cathlyn Orchard outlined that Armitage was living with his girlfriend in Rugby at the time of the discovery, and it was her son who uncovered the illicit material.
Initially, Armitage claimed that he was not actively seeking out images of children and suggested that the images might have appeared as pop-ups while he was searching for other content.
However, he later admitted to having a voyeuristic interest in such material and acknowledged that he derived sexual gratification from viewing the images.
It was also revealed that Armitage had a prior conviction from the 1990s, when he received a caution for indecent exposure after performing a sex act in a car in a public area.
Since his recent arrest, Armitage has suffered a brain injury following an accident, which he claims has left him with no memory of downloading the images.
In sentencing, Judge Andrew Lockhart QC sentenced Armitage to eight months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
This order restricts him from having unsupervised contact with children and imposes strict conditions on his internet usage to prevent further offenses.
The case highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding online child exploitation and the importance of vigilance by those close to potential offenders.
