PAUL ARCHER FROM EAST END PARK SHOUTS AND THREATENS DOG WITH HAMMER IN LEEDS

Paul Anthony Archer, a resident of Glensdale Road in the East End Park area of Leeds LS9 9JF, was involved in a disturbing incident that drew the attention of animal welfare authorities. In 2016, footage emerged showing Archer shouting and swearing at a defenseless dog, a well-loved English bull terrier named Denver, who was confined in the back of a parked car.

The video captures Archer’s aggressive behavior as he yells at Denver, demanding that the dog exit the vehicle. His language is hostile, and he threatens the animal with a hammer, escalating the situation with threatening gestures. At one point, Archer screams “DIE!” at Denver, a chilling display of anger and intimidation. When Denver refuses to comply with his commands, Archer responds by forcefully slamming the boot of the car shut, further frightening the dog.

The incident came to light after the mobile phone footage was anonymously sent to the RSPCA, prompting an investigation. RSPCA inspector Gemma Fowler expressed her concern about the welfare of Denver, stating, “Watching the footage, it’s clear that Denver is frightened of the way his owner is behaving towards him. Mr Archer wants him to get out of the car, and is becoming increasingly angry and violent because he is refusing to do so, finally slamming the boot closed on him and shouting at him to ‘die’. We all get angry sometimes, but Mr Archer’s behaviour towards Denver is totally unacceptable.”

Following the investigation, Archer appeared before Leeds Magistrates’ Court to face charges related to neglect and mistreatment of the dog. He admitted to failing to meet the needs of Denver by not allowing him to exhibit normal behavior, which is a fundamental aspect of responsible pet ownership. The court was informed that the incident was partly triggered when Denver jumped into the car while Archer was cleaning it, accidentally breaking an iPad screen.

Inspector Fowler added, “Denver is a smashing dog with a great personality, and I am pleased to say that he will now have the opportunity to find a caring home where he can be safe and happy. I also want to thank the person who filmed and sent us this footage; without their help, we wouldn’t have been able to take action. They have truly changed this dog’s life.”

As for the legal consequences, Archer was sentenced to a 12-month community order and ordered to pay £750 in costs. Additionally, he was banned from keeping animals for five years, although this ban expired in 2021. The case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the role of vigilant citizens in protecting vulnerable animals from abuse and neglect.
